'Brave,' 'Hunger Games' And The History Of Lady Archers
As Princess Merida joins the big-screen leagues of Katniss Everdeen, we look at the sport's storied past, in Hobnobbing.

A fiery bow-and-arrow-wielding heroine not named Katniss Everdeen? Color us intrigued!
This weekend, Pixar will take aim at the box-office bull's-eye with its first foray into the fairy-tale princess pic. "Brave" follows a young Scottish royal named Merida, who bucks her parents' wishes, insisting on paving her own path — with bow firmly in hand.
Of course, the animated flick is only the latest this year to feature an adept bow-woman (or bowman). There was Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in "The Avengers," William (Sam Claflin) in "Snow White and the Huntsman" and, our obvious favorite, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in "The Hunger Games." Unsurprisingly, this slew of big-screen portrayals has helped revive interest in the ancient sport, with more and more amateur archers sizing up their targets.
But let's be clear about one thing: Bow-besotted babes are nothing new. Lady archers have been around practically since the dawn of time. Follow me down their storied path:
Like most grand ideas, the concept of a woman and her bow has roots in Greek mythology. "Amazon" may be a compliment for a leggy lady nowadays, but maybe it shouldn't be, considering the ancient archers were often depicted with their left breast cut off to make wielding their weaponry simpler. The Greek goddess of the hunt, Artemis, was also frequently pictured holding a bow and arrow (sans missing mammary glands).
Throughout the Middle Ages, archery served dual purposes: fending off enemies and hunting prey for sustenance. But by the Elizabethan era, it had become a posh pastime, with proper ladies learning the sport — along with dancing and riding — as part of their studies. (P.E. was soooo much cooler back then.) In fact, Queen Elizabeth I herself (daughter of Henry VIII) is said to have been a skilled archer.
A few hundred years later, the sport made its Olympics debut in 1900, with women taking up arms at the 1904 games. The event took a hiatus from the Games between 1920 and 1972, reappearing at the Munich Olympics. And while plenty of Hollywood heavyweights have learned the skill for a movie, one took it upon herself to learn for the sport of it. Actress Geena Davis made it all the way to the semifinal rounds of the Olympic trials in 1999, hoping to compete in the 2000 games in Sydney. The games and a gold medal were not in Davis' future, but she already has one gilded goody (namely, an Oscar) to console herself.
And speaking of actresses and archery, the last few decades have offered up a bumper crop of bow roles, from Gwyneth Paltrow in "Emma" to Saoirse Ronan in "Hannah." And, of course, Lawrence in "The Hunger Games."

With her new movie "The Last Ride" having just made its way into theaters, Kaley Cuoco pitched in on the promotions by covering the July 2012 of Maxim Australia magazine.
The 26-year-old blonde actress looked as hot as can be as she struck a range of seductive poses for the Chris Fortuna shot spread while talking about being averse to the Hollywood scene and boasting about how she's a top-notch girlfriend.

"I'm very uninvolved in the Hollywood scene. I might have been to a club once in my entire life. I'm the biggest homebody. I think I've been hungover one time, and I hated the feeling. I love being at home with the dogs. I wish I wasn't so pathetic. I fall asleep on the couch, no matter what, every night between 8:30 and nine. I am not exaggerating."
On whether she's ever had an unrequited crush:
"I'm sorry, but I usually get what I want. When I go for something, there's nothing that stops me. Nothing."
On whether she's dating anyone:
"I'm not. I'm newly single. I'm always the girl with the boyfriend. I love having a boyfriend, because I think I'm the greatest girlfriend in the world."
On what makes her so great:
"Because I'm awesome! I'm such a guys girl. I love every sport. I'll go to any game, any time. I can eat, I can drink, I can have such a good time with the guys. I'm just not a girly girl. I'm completely low-maintenance, and I think that's great for a guy."

Keira Knightley Talks About 'Seeking A Friend' ... For Sex
Actress tells MTV News her romance with Steve Carell in 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World' is not really a romance at all.

The new Keira Knightley-Steve Carell film, "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," is not a traditional romance for a number of reasons — the main one being the meteor that is headed toward Earth and will likely end all life on the planet.
The other, less cataclysmic way "Seeking a Friend" subverts your typical rom-com tropes is that the relationship at the center of the film isn't—at least according to Knightley —a romantic one. It's just about sex.
Her character, Penny, and Carell's character, Dodge, neighbors who have never spoken, only join forces when they're left utterly alone as the world comes to an end. Eventually, their relationship becomes something more, but Knightley would argue not much more. "I don't know that their romantic arc actually has much to do with romance in the beginning and has more to do with 'It's the end of the world, and we both want to have sex,' " she said. "I think that was sort of more what the romantic arc was hinged on, and then what it becomes is about friendship."
For such a complex on-screen relationship, chemistry between Carell and Knightley became all-the-more important, but the actress said that getting along with her co-star was never a problem. "As far as chemistry goes with Steve, he is one of the loveliest men in the entire world," she said. "He is so funny, and so courteous to everyone. He is a consummate professional. He's just a lovely, lovely man. I defy anybody not to have good chemistry with him."
Carell, who got his start as a comedian, once again shows off his dramatic chops in "Seeking a Friend," and Knightley said he is not one of the funny men who have to be on all the time.
"There are a lot of comics who are fabulous, but are relentlessly [telling] one joke after another, after another, which is completely fabulous, but when you're working, it can be kind of tricky," Knightley said. "Steve's not like that. He is incredibly funny, but he's funny in a way that makes everybody around him feel like they're funny as well. He's incredibly inclusive, but also, he's a complete professional, so he's about getting the best of everybody. If that means having a laugh and having a joke, that's what happens. If that means giving everyone space, that's what he means as well."
